When Cargo Is Unknown, Everyone Has to Assume the Worst

What a Pennsylvania train derailment can teach us about hazmat compliance in ecommerce

On June 30, 2026, a 72-car CSX freight train derailed in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania. Sixteen cars left the tracks. Several of the derailed cars were marked as potentially carrying hazardous materials.

In the first moments, responders did not know exactly what they were dealing with.

So they responded to the worst-case possibility.

Residents nearby were told to shelter in place. Emergency crews established a response area. Hazmat teams were activated. Roads were closed. Officials worked to identify the contents of the affected cars and determine whether there was a threat to the surrounding community.

Ultimately, no hazardous materials leaked, no injuries were reported, and the area was declared safe.

But the disruption happened before that answer was known.

That is the point.

When the contents of cargo are unknown, responders cannot assume it is safe. They have to protect people against what it could be.

The same principle applies inside an ecommerce fulfillment operation.

Visibility changes the response

Hazmat compliance is often treated like a paperwork exercise. But the real purpose of a strong hazmat program is much more practical:

Know what you have before you have to respond to it.

That starts with three fundamentals.

1. Clear labeling gives people critical information

In an emergency, people need to know what they are dealing with as quickly as possible.

Proper hazmat labeling provides that information. It helps warehouse teams, emergency responders, carriers, and other stakeholders understand the potential risks associated with a product and take the appropriate precautions.

Without clear identification, the response starts with uncertainty.

And uncertainty creates risk.

2. SDS documentation eliminates guesswork

A Safety Data Sheet, or SDS, provides critical information about a product’s hazards, handling requirements, storage conditions, and emergency response procedures.

For fulfillment teams, that information helps determine how a product should be handled and stored.

For emergency personnel, it can help answer critical questions when something goes wrong.

An SDS does not eliminate risk. But it replaces an unknown with information.

3. Unknown SKUs should not move freely through the operation

A product that has not been properly reviewed should not be treated like every other product.

At ShipMonk, potentially hazardous or unreviewed SKUs can be quarantined while the necessary information is gathered and reviewed.

That pause matters.

The goal is simple: make sure a product is understood before it moves through the operation.

You do not want unknown cargo moving through a facility any more than you want responders approaching unknown cargo during an emergency.

Compliance is about more than checking a box

The Bensalem derailment ended without a hazardous materials release. But the initial response still required caution because responders did not yet have all the information they needed.

That is how safety systems are supposed to work.

When information is missing, you take the safer path.

When information is available, you can make a more informed decision.

For e-commerce brands, that means hazmat compliance is not just about regulatory requirements. It is about protecting the people who handle products, the facilities where products are stored, and the communities around those facilities.

The best time to identify a potential hazard is before there is an incident.

Because when something goes wrong, the question should not be:

“What is this?”

The answer should already be clear.
